Ten Minutes = Eternity
Ten Minutes. That's how long the woman said our interview would take. In & Out. Riiiiiiiiiiiight. I should have known better.
I arrived at the airport early because I wanted to make sure I wasn't late. Unlike the airport back home in Indy, there isn't much to see or do at this one. Almost all the shops and food is past the security point. I headed over to the kiosk where she had instructed me to go about ten minutes before our interview time. The associate informed me that she was sure the HR Manager was still in another interview, but that she should be done shortly.
By the time I finally met the woman, it was going on two-thirty. Yeah, I was just a little annoyed by this point. I know that interviews can have run long, but she knew I was coming. She should have at least stepped away from the interview long enough to come greet me and ask for my patience.
During the time I was waiting, I couldn't help but people watch. The airport had a steady stream of travelers yesterday afternoon. One man in particular caught my interest simply because he kept looking at his pocket watch every minute or so. I'm not sure if he was waiting for someone, but he wouldn't stop opening his watch. I didn't know men still even carried those type of watches. I never see anyone with one.
When she finally met me, I'm not even sure if she knew who I was. She seemed a little scatter-brained. I was told that she was going to fetch my application/resume from her office and be right back. Ok, that ended up being another ten to fifteen minute wait. FunFunFun. And as I'm waiting, I look outside to see that it has started storming and I don't have an umbrella. <insert loud sigh>
FINALLY, she comes back to me and proceeds to tell me that she doesn't need to interview me. The General Manager who I met with last week apparently really liked me and I come HIGHLY recommended from my former boss in Indy. So, she offered me a position and I was literally surprised by the hourly amount I was given. It's less then I was making in Indy, but a few dollars more then what I actually expected to be offered. The position I am taking (team leader) is actually a few steps down from what I had done in the past (in my opinion at least) and I know that most team leaders don't get offered this much to start. She explained to me that they were starting me off at that rate because of my previous work at the Indy location. I pretty much did a little bit of everything and know more then a normal team leader would. So, I was thankful for that.
I filled out paperwork to have a background check performed and to receive a parking permit. When working at an airport (especially this one since everything is past security), you have to get fingerprinted and have a background check done to receive a security badge which allows you to travel freely through the airport. She said she'd set an appt for my fingerprinting and call me. So I'm waiting to hear back about that.
I'm not sure when I'll be starting this new job. They are still in the process of re-opening stores and opening new stores after a long period of construction throughout the airport. That's ok though because I received that summons for jury duty and have that in two weeks. I'd much rather start after that is over and out of the way.
When all was said and done, I ended up being there over an hour and it was still raining outside when I left. I looked like a drowned rat by the time I got to my car, but I was pretty much dry by the time I got home.
Now I must go email my former boss to find out what she told them about me that scored me a nice starting wage.

Congrats on the job and the nice starting wage - at least you got something good for all that waiting (and getting rained on)!

I might have had to hurt her if it hadn't been worth it. LOL

Congratulations! I'm glad it had a good ending to a bad beginning! Will that disorganized woman be your boss?

Thanks so much!!
She's the HR Manager so I will have to deal with her somewhat, but my overall boss will be the General Manager.

So glad that you got the job especially after that hassle! Isn't it odd that a lot of people who do the hiring are scatter-brained? I've found that to be the case in my past.
Great news on the wages too

Thanks!
She's definitely scatter-brained. Nice, but a little ditzy.

Congratulations on the successful job hunt! Don't know about your neck of the woods, but around here, if you wear a suit to the jury duty thing and tell them you're some kind of professional-sounding title, you never get picked for a jury. They only want "common folks" on juries.

I'm not sure how the jury selection works around here. None of the people I know (who have lived here all their lives) have ever been selected. Just my luck.

congrats. I am not clear just what your position is and why it is connected with the airport; it sounds interesting, would you mind sharing?

The company that hired me is one of the largest airport retailers in the country. They operate stores within over 60 airports. The stores themselves are open 365 days a year from early morning to mid-evening. My job will be to supervise assigned stores within my airport location. I'll work with the store associates to wait on customers, suggestive sell, maintain the store appearance and restock when needed.

Congratulations on your new job. You must have gotten quite a recommendation. Makes you wonder though why the previous interview went so long. Hopefully, you won't run into hangups like this once you start working!

Given I have a history with this company, I really won't be surprised if there are some hang-ups here and there along the way. It seems to be tradition.
